Natural Resource Outreach Technician

Introduction: The Perkins County Conservation District is seeking a self-motivated person, able to work independently and/or as a team member in rural northwestern South Dakota.  The Natural Resource Outreach Technician (NROT) will provide technical assistance and expertise while strengthening the conservation district’s ability to provide outreach leadership, education, planning and implementation of needed projects within Perkins County. The focus of the position is to increase the visibility of the conservation district through outreach and education with producers that historically have not utilized the conservation grants and programs in the past. This position is based out of Bison, South Dakota.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ø  This position is an entry level position perfect for recent graduates.

Ø  Knowledgeable of Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, Power point, Teams, and Outreach.

Ø  Become knowledgeable and proficient of conservation practices and related tree and shrub planting and management. 

Ø  Effective at developing and maintaining human relationships and engaging with the public. 

Ø  Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, gather information, and make sound and reasonable conclusions. 

 Duties:

Ø  Promote education and outreach of conservation practices, programs, and grants available with a particular focus on underserved populations and youth education.

Ø  Work with USDA NRCS to successfully put conservation contracts into action through:

o   Consultations, program promotion and eligibility of producers.

o   Discussion of resource concerns and conservation practice applicability.

o   Site visits to ensure practice feasibility, and practice implementation.

o   Administrative plans and contract management.

Ø  Assist state and federal agencies with utilization of various programs to assist landowners with planting of trees and shrubs for livestock protection, farmstead protection, snow management, soil erosion control, wildlife benefits etc.

Ø  Provide information pertaining to conservation district, state and federal programs, and information and education to farmers, ranchers, homeowners, and units of government. 

Ø  Conduct outreach and education efforts including news releases, field days and workshops. Perform other work as assigned.

 Salary/Benefits:  Salary is dependent on education and work experience. 32-to-40-hour flexible work week schedule. The Perkins County Conservation District offers health insurance coverage and South Dakota Retirement.
