Aquatic Invasive Species Screening at Shadehill Recreation Area

The District and SD Game Fish and Parks again partnered together to conduct watercraft inspection checkpoints at Shadehill Reservoir from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The goal was to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) into Shadehill and to mitigate the impacts of existing AIS in other bodies of water. The focus of the checkpoints was to minimize transportation of water and vegetation that could be carrying AIS, increase awareness and promote public adoption of the best practices to prevent the spread of invasive species.

Zebra mussels are an aquatic invasive species that are very destructive to water systems. At their larval stage they are microscopic which makes it easy for them to be accidentally transported in boats holding water in the ballast tanks, live wells, and bait buckets. The adults attach to hard surfaces such as pipes, propellers, boats, pontoons etc.

Help protect our water from invasive species. Always remember to:

CLEAN all plants, animals and mud from the boat, trailer, and gear.

DRAIN all water by removing plugs, opening valves, and lowering motors.

DRY interior compartments and bilge area with a sponge or towel.
